The world No 1 recovered from back-to-back opening bogeys to birdie four of six holes on the back nine, including a brilliant chip-in at the 14th that sparked his climb up the leaderboard.

Scheffler's fightback began after an opening 72, followed by a second-round 68 that left him seven strokes behind halfway leader Wyndham Clark. His third-round rally kept alive the prospect of a fifth major title in as many seasons, which would complete the career Grand Slam and make him only the seventh male golfer to achieve that feat.

Tommy Fleetwood matched Scheffler's position on level par after a 70, drawing on memories of his 2018 runner-up finish at this venue. Rory McIlroy struggled with five bogeys on the back nine, posting a 73 that dropped him further from the leaders.

Sunday's final round begins at 4pm on Sky Sports Golf, with Scheffler needing a strong performance to chase down Clark while pursuing his place among golf's immortals.
