The pole-sitter led the world championship leader early on until Turn 1 lap six, where Antonello felt forced off track and lost second position to McLaren's Lando Norris.

The 19-year-old championship leader appeared to lose composure as he raged over team radio, going off track again during the 23-lap contest. Russell's performance reduced Antonelli's championship lead to just 18 points, setting up an intriguing battle for the main race in Montreal.

The trio maintained their positions through the remainder of the sprint, with Antonelli making one final attempt at passing the McLaren at the start of the final lap before going off track once more. Russell's victory gives him momentum heading into Sunday's Grand Prix, where qualifying will be held later Saturday.
