Russell admits Antonelli deserves F1 title lead after Silverstone

George Russell finished second at the British Grand Prix but conceded he lacks the pace to challenge Kimi Antonelli for the championship lead. The Mercedes driver trails his 18-year-old team-mate by 25 points after nine rounds despite gaining 18 points at Silverstone, where Antonelli dropped from victory contention to outside the points with a broken wheel-guard. Russell was blunt: "I'm still struggling to understand this car" and admitted his performances must improve if he intends to fight for the title.

Antonelli has suffered his own misfortune — an engine failure in Barcelona and the Silverstone issue — but Russell acknowledged the Italian has simply done "a better job" across the season. The 25-point deficit, Russell said, is "probably correct" and "anywhere from 10 to 30 points behind is probably about fair." He also noted a 15-point swing from a Monaco pit-lane penalty.

Lewis Hamilton sits just seven points behind Russell in third after a Silverstone podium, while Charles Leclerc's first win of the year helped Ferrari close to 78 points in the Constructors' Championship. Russell insisted his focus remains internal: "I've got my own things I need to deal with."

The honesty is rare for a driver in title contention. Russell's deficit stems from both bad luck and genuine pace deficit; Mercedes must solve the car's inconsistency before Spa-Francorchamps on July 17-19, or Antonelli's rookie campaign will keep pulling away.
