### Rory McIlroy trails Irish Open leader after blustery opening round

Rory McIlroy battled against testing conditions at the Amgen Irish Open, finishing four shots off the clubhouse lead after a one-under par opening round. Shane Lowry sits two off the top. Blustery winds reaching 35mph made for slow going at Trump International Golf Links and Hotel in Doonbeg.

Chilean Joaquin Niemann carded a course-record 65, putting him in contention for a $30,000 bonus. Maximilian Steinlechner and Renato Paratore also featured in the early chase. Home favourite Lowry, a former amateur winner, remains in the mix at three under.

McIlroy, the world number two, endured a frustrating round, including a double bogey at the 13th, but finished under par and hopes to improve with better weather on Friday.
