The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has postponed the start of the competitive community rugby season in England until the week commencing Monday, September 21. This decision stems from significant concerns regarding player welfare and the current condition of pitches across the country.

Prolonged dry weather has rendered many grounds unsuitable for safe, full-contact rugby. The RFU had previously issued guidance on pitch management during drought conditions and emphasized the importance of the Natural Turf Pitches (NTP) Surface Risk Assessment to ensure pitches are safe for play and to mitigate injury risks. After consulting with clubs, schools, colleges, and competition committees, the RFU determined that a nationwide delay was the most prudent course of action.

RFU President Sir Bill Beaumont acknowledged the disappointment this decision will cause but stressed that player welfare and readiness were paramount. He stated that the delay provides greater certainty for all involved, allowing for the best possible opportunity for the season to commence on a fair and consistent footing nationwide. The RFU aims to offer clarity as early as possible to aid planning for volunteers and organizations.
