Newcastle believe they will miss signing Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi to Aston Villa, who have matched the £49m deal Newcastle verbally agreed with Freiburg. The offer of Champions League football was a key motivator behind Manzambi’s decision to opt for Villa.

The 20‑year‑old had verbalised personal terms with Newcastle but waited until after Switzerland’s World Cup to decide. Switzerland were knocked out by Argentina in a 3‑1 quarter‑final defeat after extra‑time. Manzambi now becomes the 10th player Newcastle have missed out on signing since summer 2024, with nine of those players joining Premier League rivals.

Previously Newcastle missed out on a string of targets: Victor Muñoz, Hugo Ekitike, Benjamin Sesko, João Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo, Dean Huijsen, Liam Delap, James Trafford, and Marc Guehi. Each transfer saw another club swoop in, often with higher fees or better terms.

The pattern highlights Newcastle’s growing ambition but also the challenge of competing against bigger clubs for top talent.
