Newcastle United has signed 18‑year‑old midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax for a transfer fee of £23 million, consisting of £20 million upfront and £3 million in potential bonuses. The Dutch prospect joined on a five‑year contract, making the move the club’s third summer signing after £42 million winger Bazoumana Toure and £18 million goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen.

Steur debuted for Ajax’s first team in the 2024/25 season and played 25 times last campaign, featuring three times in the Champions League where he became the club’s youngest player to record an assist. He has been praised with the club’s Abdelhak Nouri Trophy and has risen through the Netherlands U15–U19 squads.

The signing comes after the departure of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, who combined for £169 million. Head coach Eddie Howe said the club sees Steur as a “top young prospect” with the potential to contribute for years. Newcastle is also in advanced talks for Johan Manzambi of Freiburg, who is valued at £51 million.

Steur’s arrival injects fresh energy into a squad that has already rebuilt its midfield and defense. If he adapts quickly, Newcastle could regain a competitive edge in the Premier League and position itself for Champions League qualification next season.
