Netball's Choice Kit Debate: Tradition vs. Player Comfort

Tamsin Greenway has welcomed London Mavericks' introduction of choice kit to Netball's Super League, calling it a "no-brainer" that will not end the sport's traditional dress uniform. The club became the first professional netball team to offer players options including shorts, skorts, leggings and long vests alongside the iconic dress. Greenway, a former England international, said she struggled with uniformity during her playing days and supports giving athletes more comfortable options.

The move follows research showing 64 per cent of girls drop out of sport before age 16, with Women in Sport studies highlighting uniform comfort as a key factor. Youth Sport Trust data found 58 per cent of girls want more uniform choices in PE. Mavericks' decision aims to create a more welcoming environment for multiple body types while maintaining the sport's identity. The choice kit debuted in the Super League this season.

Former England coach Tracey Neville acknowledged the value of choice but emphasized the netball dress's commercial and branding significance. She noted the dress's intellectual property status, its massive commercial asset, and the power of uniformity in team presentation. Neville stressed that the dress's historical significance and the presentation moment when players receive their dress remain important to netball's identity.
