Mercedes Identify Battery Issues Behind Painful Reliability Failures

Mercedes technical director James Allison has pinpointed the cause of their recent reliability woes after costly retirements for George Russell and Kimi Antonelli in recent races. Russell's Canadian Grand Prix exit while leading and Antonelli's late Barcelona retirement while running second have cost the team valuable championship points.

Allison revealed the failures stem from battery module issues affecting both factory and customer cars including McLaren. While not identical problems, they originate from the same battery area. The team plans to phase in new modules during the 2026 season to address these vulnerabilities.

Despite the setbacks, Mercedes maintain commanding leads in both championships. They sit 72 points clear of Ferrari in the Constructors' standings, while Antonelli holds a 41-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton and 50-point gap on Russell in the drivers' race. Ferrari's recent upgrade package closed the performance gap significantly.

Allison acknowledged these DNFs represent genuine failures but emphasized Mercedes has the development capability to respond. The young regulations mean significant upgrades can rapidly shift the competitive order, and the team expects to restore their early-season advantage through factory improvements.
