Manchester United have agreed a two-year contract with Michael Carrick to make him their permanent head coach, with an option for a third year that could keep him at Old Trafford until 2029. The club are finalising legal details and expect to confirm the appointment within the next 48 hours.

Carrick has overseen a remarkable turnaround since taking charge, winning 10 of his 15 games in charge including victories over Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea. He has secured Champions League football for next season, delivering a potential £100m revenue boost. The former United midfielder has also revitalised the squad, with Kobbie Mainoo nominated for Young Player of the Year.

Director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada believe Carrick is the right person to lead the club forward. Players including Amad Diallo have publicly backed him, saying everyone in the dressing room wants him to stay. United host Nottingham Forest on Sunday in their final home game of the season.
