Wigan Warriors captain Liam Farrell has announced he will retire at the end of the 2026 Super League season, bringing an end to a remarkable 17-year career spent entirely at the club.

The 36-year-old has made 428 appearances for Wigan, scoring 151 tries, and has lifted six Super League titles, five Challenge Cups, and two World Club Challenges. He has also earned 12 caps for England and has captained the team since 2023.

Farrell has been sidelined since June due to an ongoing neck issue, casting doubt on whether he will play again before retirement. With potentially just three matches left in the season — including the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford on October 3 — the chance of a fairy-tale farewell remains uncertain.

"Careers don't always end how you want them to end," Farrell told Sky Sports' The Bench podcast. "I am at peace with that." He added: "My goal was always one game for Wigan. If I'd have come off the bench, played once, I'd have been happy and retired there."

Off the field, Farrell will transition into the club's performance setup, a role he has been preparing for with qualifications earned in recent years.
