Lawes returns to Premiership with Sale, eyes England comeback

Courtney Lawes has signed with Sale Sharks for the 2024‑25 Premiership, ending a two‑year stint with French side Brive. The 36‑year‑old forward says the move lets him finish his career where it began, in England’s top flight, and he announced he is ending his international retirement, eyeing a possible England recall and hopes his presence will boost the Sharks' forward pack.

Lawes left Northampton Saints after 17 seasons, moving his family to Corrèze before returning to the Premiership. He believes the French environment preserved his body and mind, allowing him to contemplate a final season without the pressure of domestic rugby. Under RFU rules he was ineligible for England while abroad, so the Sale switch reopens that pathway and aims to help Sale challenge for a European spot.

With England emerging from their worst Six Nations performance, Lawes hopes his experience—one of only five Englishmen to earn 105 caps—adds leadership and intensity to a rebuilding squad. He stresses selection will depend on club form, not seniority, and remains realistic about earning a place. Should he feature, the veteran could provide a rare blend of grit and composure for the upcoming World Cup.
