England captain Maro Itoje may sit out the summer Nations Championship Tests against South Africa, Fiji, and Argentina, head coach Steve Borthwick confirmed. Itoje has exceeded RFU player welfare guidelines for match minutes in each of the last two seasons and is managing lingering concussion symptoms plus a knee injury following the Lions' 2-1 series win over Australia.

Borthwick held discussions with Itoje and head of performance Phil Morrow, with the 31-year-old arriving at camp Monday before leaving that night. The three-match, three-continent schedule involves over 25,000 miles of travel, and the captain has no decision locked in yet. England are rebuilding after a disastrous Six Nations, finishing fifth with a single win.

Borthwick has been backed by RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney through to the 2027 World Cup. New additions include South Africa-born Benhard Janse van Rensburg and Byron McGuigan joining the coaching staff full-time. The message is clear: nobody's place is guaranteed when bodies are breaking down.
