Injuries force Ireland into Nations Championship with key players missing

Ireland head into the Nations Championship without a host of starters. Fly‑half Jack Crowley, who cemented his place during the 2026 Six Nations, misses the Australian and New Zealand tests after a mysterious nerve problem sidelined him at Munster. Loosehead prop Andrew Porter endured a calf tear last week, ending a significant season already blighted by injury. Connacht wing Mack Hansen remains out following foot surgery in December.

IRFU announced seven more absentees: lock Ryan Baird, centre Shayne Bolton, back row Jack Boyle, prop Edwin Edogbo, utility Tom Farrell, hooker Paddy Mc Carthy and back Calvin Nash. Their unavailability forces coach Andy Farrell to lean on uncapped Connacht trio Billy Bohan, Sam Illo and Sean Jansen, while Leinster stalwart Caelan Doris captains the side.

Ireland finished second in the Six Nations, securing a Triple Crown, but the injury list threatens momentum ahead of the July tour. The squad opens against Australia at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium on July 4, then travels to Newcastle for Japan before a final test at Eden Park versus New Zealand. The depleted roster will test Farrell’s depth and adaptability.
