Hollie Doyle Eyes Derby Clue on Wareeth at Newmarket

Jockey Hollie Doyle previews a busy week at Newmarket’s Craven Meeting, focusing heavily on Wednesday’s Listed Feilden Stakes where she pilots Wareeth, a Derby hopeful for trainer Archie Watson. The colt, owned by Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum, steps up significantly in class after dominating his maiden by 14 lengths at Newcastle last month. Doyle is keen to assess his true potential over the extended distance.

Wareeth, a son of Sea The Stars, lacks a Derby entry currently, but this race serves as a major litmus test for his ceiling under Doyle’s guidance. Competition includes Aidan O’Brien’s experienced Isaac Newton, who holds a Derby entry and an official rating of 106, setting the benchmark for the field. Godolphin’s Poseidon’s Warrior also enters from novice company.

Beyond the Derby picture, Doyle is optimistic about Heather Main’s sprinter Zoulu Chief in the handicap, believing the five-year-old is ready for a big showing following solid All-Weather winter form. Furthermore, Doyle rates outsider Harlequin Breeze highly in the Nell Gwyn Stakes, suggesting her determination warrants respect despite long odds in the 1000 Guineas trial.

Thursday brings another key ride aboard Marco Botti’s Prince Of India in the Zyn Abernant Stakes, a powerfully built colt Doyle liked on the gallops last year. Meanwhile, Aidan O’Brien’s Group 1 winner Hawk Mountain demands attention as the likely favourite in the Group 3 Betway Craven Stakes.
