Hamilton's Ferrari breakthrough raises stakes for Austrian GP championship battle

Lewis Hamilton broke Ferrari's 34-race winless streak at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, delivering the partnership's first victory together. The seven-time champion's triumph ended his personal 98-race drought dating back to 2024, marking a historic moment for both driver and team. Hamilton has now scored four podiums in seven races this season.

Mercedes had dominated the opening six races and still leads both championships comfortably. The Silver Arrows hold a 72-point advantage in the Constructors' Championship and Kimi Antonelli maintains a 41-point cushion in the Drivers' standings. Team principal Frederic Vasseur insists Ferrari won't think about titles, focusing instead on incremental improvements race by race.

Ferrari's breakthrough came via eight major aerodynamic changes to their SF-26, the largest upgrade package seen this season. Now the team prepares to debut their first ADUO engine upgrade in Austria, where the high-altitude circuit rewards power improvements. The upgrades may add less than 10 horsepower but could prove decisive on the 2.69-mile Red Bull Ring layout.

With Red Bull holding the benchmark engine and Ferrari ranked four per cent behind, any performance gains matter significantly. The championship battle appears wide open as teams deploy different development strategies in F1's new regulation era.
