Grant Forrest birdied the final hole to claim a one-shot victory at the Open de Espana in Madrid, finishing 14 under and avoiding a three-way play-off. The 33-year-old Scot sank a four-foot putt on the 18th at Real Club de Campo Villa de Madrid for a final-round 70. He denied home favourite Eugenio Chacarra and France's Victor Perez, who both finished at 13 under.

Forrest, who shared a one-shot lead with England's Joe Dean heading into the final round, secured his third DP World Tour title and a place at next year's Masters and The Open. "I'm in shock, honestly, pure shock just now," he said after his first overseas win. "It's been such a tough year. I've just not played well at all."

The see-saw round included five birdies and four bogeys. Chacarra had surged into a share of the lead with three successive birdies and an eagle at the seventh, while Perez made back-to-back birdies at the 16th and 17th to join the lead group before parring the last two holes.

Denmark's Jacob Skov Olesen finished outright fourth after a bogey on the final hole. Dean and Daniel Brown tied for fifth, with Brown birdieing the last five holes for a bogey-free 29 on the back nine.
