England Netball Coach Exit Sparks Concerns

Jess Thirlby has stepped down as England netball head coach with immediate effect, just four months before the Commonwealth Games. Her departure comes after nearly seven years in charge, with the coach citing a desire to focus on supporting her family as the primary reason. The timing has raised eyebrows given the upcoming major tournament.

Thirlby's final act was overseeing England's 2-1 series defeat to South Africa last month. Former England international Tamsin Greenway questions the timing, noting this creates disruption before crucial matches against Australia and South Africa in the pool stage. England failed to medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games despite entering as defending champions.

Anna Stembridge steps up from assistant coach to take the reins, having previously led England from 2011-2015. Greenway believes while this could provide fresh impetus, it's a significant risk with such a short preparation time. The new coaching staff includes Olivia Murphy, Sharni Layton, and Jo Harten, bringing experience but limited preparation time.
