Novak Djokovic survived a major first-round scare at Wimbledon, defeating Yibing Wu 4-6 7-5 4-6 4-6 after three hours and 12 minutes on Centre Court. The world No 99 initially handled the closed roof conditions better than the seven-time champion, who needed treatment for fatigue and showed visible frustration with the crowd's underdog support.

Defending champion Jannik Sinner also battled through five sets, overcoming Miomir Kecmanovic 4-6 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-2 6-3. The world No 1 took a nasty fall in the third set tiebreak, appearing to twist his knee, but rose without seeking medical attention and dominated the final two sets despite bleeding from his foot.

British hopes crumbled as all 10 home players who completed matches on Monday lost, marking the worst performance since daily records began in 2000. Cameron Norrie was the only Brit handed a favorable draw, yet still fell to qualifier Michael Zheng in a fifth-set tie-break. Jack Draper and Emma Raducanu had already withdrawn injured, compounding the disappointment.

Aryna Sabalenka provided a contrast, cruising past Teodora Kostovic 6-2 6-3 in just 65 minutes and rating her performance eight out of ten. Meanwhile, French Open runner-up Maja Chwalinska fell on match point and lost to Thai qualifier Mananchaya Sawangkaew, ending her campaign in dramatic fashion.
