Multiple reports claim golfer Bryson DeChambeau allegedly threatened to involve President Donald Trump during a rules controversy at The Open. DeChambeau was given a two-shot penalty after officials determined he had improved the area of his backswing by flattening grass on the fifth hole at Royal Birkdale.

The penalty dropped him from second place to tied-fifth. DeChambeau is reportedly a friend of Trump and had previously served on his council for sports, fitness, and nutrition.

R&A chief executive Mark Darbon stated he had not received a call from President Trump regarding the incident. DeChambeau later met with Darbon to request his scorecard from the previous day, but this was declined. DeChambeau concluded the tournament tied-14th and did not speak to the media after his rounds.

Fellow golfers had mixed reactions, with Scottie Scheffler defending DeChambeau, while Rory McIlroy called the incident 'performative'.
