Darts pundit Mark Webster battles rare blood cancer

Former world darts champion Mark Webster revealed he is undergoing treatment for a rare blood disorder. The Welshman, who lifted the BDO World Championship trophy in 2008, has been absent from Sky Sports' coverage since February after a diagnosis of hairy cell leukaemia. He discussed his condition in a candid interview on the Darts World YouTube channel.

Webster explained that while the disease carries a grim reputation, medical statistics give him a favorable outlook—about 95 percent of cases achieve remission. Ongoing chemotherapy has left his white‑blood‑cell count low, compromising his immunity and preventing a return to the bustling studio environment he thrives in.

He last appeared on a Sky Sports broadcast covering the Premier League match in Newcastle on February 5, and a tentative plan to join the Brighton event was scrapped when recent blood tests showed insufficient recovery. Webster stressed his desire to stay active, yet acknowledges the need to follow medical advice patiently.

Fans and fellow commentators have rallied with messages of support, noting Webster’s long‑standing contribution to darts commentary. Though his return remains uncertain, his optimism and the high remission rate suggest he could resume his on‑air role once his blood counts normalise, restoring a familiar voice to the sport’s television coverage.
