Colombia 1-0 Ghana: Arias Goal Sends Cafeteros to Last 16 vs Switzerland

Colombia secured their place in the World Cup last 16 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ghana in Kansas City. Jhon Arias provided the decisive moment in the 14th minute, finishing calmly after Luis Suarez's pinpoint cross. The win continues Colombia's impressive run, reaching the knockout stages for the third consecutive tournament after quarter-final appearances in 2014 and last-16 exits in 2018.

An unusual start saw both teams forced into early changes before the 15th minute - a first in World Cup history. Colombia's Jhon Cordoba and Ghana's Marvin Senaya both departed injured, with Suarez and Alidu Seidu coming on. Despite this disruption, Colombia controlled proceedings and should have extended their lead before halftime through Luis Diaz and Johan Mojica, who was denied by a brilliant save from Lawrence Ati Zigi.

A second goal was controversially disallowed in the 57th minute when Diaz converted Jefferson Lerma's cross but was flagged offside. Colombia's dominance was evident throughout, with further chances falling to Diaz, Davinson Sanchez and Juan Fernando Quintero. Ghana offered little threat going forward, and the slender advantage proved decisive.

Nestor Lorenzo's side now travel to Vancouver to face Switzerland on July 7, with a quarter-final berth against either Argentina or Egypt awaiting the winner. Colombia's experience in high-stakes matches gives them an edge in the knockout phase.
