Chelsea VAR Penalty Error Confirmed by Panel

The independent Key Match Incident Panel has determined that Chelsea should not have been awarded a penalty during their 3-1 win over Crystal Palace. The panel concluded unanimously that the VAR intervention recommending a penalty was incorrect when Joao Pedro's shot struck Jaydee Canvot's arm.

The incident occurred when Chelsea led 2-0 at Selhurst Park. Referee Darren England initially waved play on, but VAR Matt Donohue called for an on-field review that lasted nearly two minutes. England then overturned his decision and awarded the penalty, which Enzo Fernandez converted to make it 3-0.

The panel identified two key factors in their decision. Firstly, Canvot's arm was not in an unnatural position and he was not making his body bigger. Secondly, video review showed a deflection off Canvot's hip before the ball struck his arm, providing further mitigation for the handball not being penalized.
