Chelsea appoint McFarlane as interim manager for rest of season

Calum McFarlane has been appointed Chelsea's interim manager until the end of the season, taking over following Liam Rosenior's sacking. The 39-year-old will be in the dugout for Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against Leeds at Wembley, with the club also targeting European qualification in the remaining Premier League games.

This isn't McFarlane's first taste of interim leadership at Stamford Bridge. He took temporary charge after Enzo Maresca's exit in January, overseeing a 1-1 draw at Manchester City and a 2-1 defeat at Fulham. His tactical adjustments earned praise during that spell, and those who worked with him at Kinetic Academy describe him as a student of the game obsessed with modern developments.

Chelsea are planning to take their time with the permanent appointment, having not yet spoken to any candidates or drawn up a shortlist. Andoni Iraola, Oliver Glasner, Xabi Alonso, Marco Silva and Cesc Fabregas are among those available. The club has previously held talks with Luis Enrique, Hansi Flick, Julian Nagelsmann and Roberto De Zerbi, though it remains unclear whether elite managers will accept the club's current structure.
