Champion Hurdle Field Set: The New Lion Leads 9-Horse Lineup

The Unibet Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham has attracted a nine-horse field for Tuesday's opening-day feature. The New Lion heads the lineup as clear favorite, despite falling in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle and narrowly winning the International Hurdle after an injury to Sir Gino. Trainer Dan Skelton's charge will face stiff competition.

Last year's shock winner Golden Ace returns to defend her crown after chasing home Sir Gino in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton. Paul Nicholls supplemented Tutti Quanti for £18,000 following his runaway success in the William Hill Hurdle at Newbury. Willie Mullins fields three runners including star mare Lossiemouth, who could target a fourth Festival success.

Gordon Elliott's Brighterdaysahead aims to improve her Festival fortunes after being based away from Prestbury Park at Olly Murphy's stable. Joe Tizzard's Alexei has won three valuable races this season, while Henry de Bromhead's Workahead completes the field. The New Lion's recent performances suggest he'll need to be at his best to overcome this competitive lineup.
