Celtic fans reject Robbie Keane over Maccabi ties

Dozens of Celtic supporters clubs have signed a joint statement opposing the possible appointment of former Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane as manager. The backlash stems from Keane’s recent stint with Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he stayed on after the Gaza conflict began. Fans argue his involvement conflicts with Celtic’s historic solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

Groups such as the Green Brigade, Bhoys Celtic ultras, Glasgow University Celtic Supporters Club and podcasts like The Cynic have signed the letter, which the North Curve Celtic X account says totals 67 organisations. The petition, issued by Celtic Fans for the Liberation of Palestine, condemns Keane’s decision as “unconscionable” and urges the board to reject the hire.

Keane guided Maccabi to a league‑and‑cup double before resigning in summer 2024, citing duty of care to his staff. Celtic’s board now faces pressure to balance on‑field ambitions with supporter sentiment, as the club’s identity is rooted in anti‑oppression activism. The controversy could sway the managerial shortlist and test the club’s unity.

Board chairman Dermot Desmond, the principal shareholder, has been linked to talks with Keane, intensifying speculation about a swift appointment. Should the club proceed, it risks alienating a vocal segment of its fanbase and inviting further protests outside Celtic Park. The decision now stands as a litmus test for how Celtic reconciles competitive goals with its activist heritage.
