British players Jacob Fearnley and Sonay Kartal secured opening-round victories at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Fearnley defeated Damir Dzumhur 6-3, 6-3 in a straight-sets win, marking his first main-draw victory since October after a string of early exits at Challenger tournaments. The 22-year-old will face 2021 champion Taylor Fritz in the second round.

Kartal battled through a tough match against qualifier Lanlana Tararudee, winning 6-4, 6-4 to advance. The 22-year-old British player acknowledged the challenge of facing qualifiers who already have tournament match experience. She will next face world No. 20 Emma Navarro of the United States. Kartal praised the Indian Wells conditions, comparing them favorably to her hometown of Brighton.

Fellow British player Francesca Jones suffered a 6-3, 6-1 defeat to American qualifier Kayla Day in the opening round. The Indian Wells tournament features both ATP and WTA tours with matches broadcast live on Sky Sports and streaming platforms.
