Ben Stokes Denies Rift with McCullum After Curfew Suspension

Ben Stokes has dismissed suggestions of a falling-out with head coach Brendon McCullum following his suspension for breaching ECB curfew rules. The England captain and fast bowler Gus Atkinson missed the second Test at The Oval, which England lost by 253 runs to New Zealand, after a nightclub incident on June 8.

The ECB's disciplinary process concluded there was 'no blame' attached to either player, finding Atkinson was the 'victim of unproved attacks' who did not retaliate, while Stokes was not involved in or witnessed any altercations. Both have now been recalled for the third Test decider at Trent Bridge, though they received written conduct warnings for contravening contractual obligations.

Speaking publicly for the first time, Stokes emphasized his strong relationship with McCullum extends beyond cricket, stating they 'genuinely are very good mates' despite disagreeing on some matters. He revealed it was 'tough to watch' friend Joe Root captain the side under difficult circumstances, praising Root's character for stepping in.

Stokes acknowledged the incident's impact on teammates and expressed being 'overwhelmed' by public support. With England's series against New Zealand hanging in the balance, both players return as the team seeks to avoid defeat in the decisive final Test.
