USMNT's Balogun Red Card Appeal Denied, Faces World Cup Ban

The U.S. Men's National Team cannot appeal Folarin Balogun's red card from Wednesday's match, sources told ESPN. This means the forward will miss the World Cup round-of-16 match against Belgium. Balogun could face a suspension longer than one game if FIFA deems his challenge on Tarik Muharemovic severe enough for further punishment.

FIFA's disciplinary code allows for additional penalties beyond the automatic one-match ban for red cards. While the VAR review is considered the initial appeal, there is no formal process to challenge the decision itself. Balogun, who has scored three goals in the tournament, was sent off in the 64th minute after a challenge reviewed by VAR.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino criticized the red card, calling it "never a red card" and a normal football action. However, Muharemovic required significant on-field treatment for an ankle and Achilles tendon injury after the incident. The U.S. will now face Belgium in Seattle without their leading scorer.
