Union deal averts strike at SoFi Stadium ahead of World Cup

Union representatives for about 2,000 food‑service workers at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium announced a tentative contract on Tuesday, sidestepping a strike that could have hit the U.S. men’s national team’s World Cup opener on Friday. The agreement follows a vote authorizing a walkout after talks with provider Legends Global stalled. Avoiding a labor dispute keeps the venue ready for eight World Cup games.

The bargaining unit, UNITE HERE Local 11, pressed for higher wages, limits on subcontracting and job security amid heightened immigration enforcement under President Trump. Co‑president Kurt Petersen called the pact “the strongest at any NFL stadium,” noting most employees will earn $40 per hour and tipped staff see at least a 30 % raise. Those gains address long‑standing pay gaps.

With the labor issue settled, focus shifts to the tournament’s impact on local economies and fan experience. Community groups in Atlanta and Miami have also urged a pause on immigration raids during matches, fearing disruptions. SoFi’s eight scheduled games, beginning with the U.S. versus Paraguay, now proceed without the cloud of a work stoppage. Ticket prices are expected to surge.
