Neymar cleared in Barcelona fraud case

Spain's Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the acquittal of Neymar and former Barcelona presidents Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu in the fraud case stemming from the Brazil star's 2013 transfer from Santos. The court rejected the appeal against a 2022 ruling that determined no crime occurred during the player's acquisition by Barcelona.

The legal battle centered on allegations that DIS, a Brazilian investment firm owning 40% of Neymar's rights, was shortchanged when it received just €6.8 million—40% of the official €17.1m transfer fee. DIS claimed the true value of the transfer was understated, costing them millions in rightful earnings. Prosecutors had sought a two-year prison sentence for Neymar and a €10 million fine.

The Supreme Court's Criminal Chamber found "the inconsistency of the prosecution's case," declaring "there was no corruption in the business dealings, nor any improper fraud, not on the part of the player, his representatives, or FC Barcelona." The ruling brings finality to a case that has shadowed Neymar's career since his record-breaking move to Barcelona.
