Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed Mexico has "no issue" hosting Iran's World Cup team after the US requested FIFA find an alternative base camp. Iran will train in Tijuana while playing matches in Inglewood, California and Seattle, avoiding overnight stays in the United States due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The move comes amid the Iran war that began February 28, 2026, with US sanctions complicating Iran's stay. Originally planned for Tucson, Arizona, Iran's team now bases in Mexico after FIFA requested assistance. The US State Department confirmed the Iranian team's participation remains welcome despite political sensitivities.

Teams use base camps for training between matches during the June 11-July 19 tournament co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico. Mexico continues working with FIFA to finalize logistical arrangements as political tensions create unexpected challenges for hosting international sporting events.
