Guillermo Ochoa, widely considered among the greatest Mexican goalkeepers in history, announced his retirement from elite soccer on Tuesday, ending a distinguished 22-year professional career. The 41-year-old said before the 2026 World Cup it would be his last tournament.

Ochoa was selected for six World Cups — a feat shared only by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi — starting in 2014, 2018, and 2022. He debuted with Club América in 2004, became the first Mexico-born goalkeeper in Europe with Ajaccio in 2011, and played for Málaga, Granada, Standard Liège, Salernitana, AVS Futebol, and AEL Limassol.

At club level, Ochoa won the 2005 Clausura with América and the Belgian Cup with Standard Liège. Internationally, he captured six Concacaf Gold Cups and a Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze. In his final World Cup appearance, manager Javier Aguirre brought him on for the last 13 minutes against Czechia at Estadio Azteca, where he kissed the goalposts and took a final walk around the center circle.
