Messi Benched for Argentina's Group Finale Against Jordan

Lionel Messi will begin Argentina's final Group J match versus Jordan from the substitutes' bench, coach Lionel Scaloni confirmed Friday. Argentina has already secured qualification as group winners after victories over Algeria and Austria. Scaloni declined to elaborate on his lineup decisions during the pre-match news conference in Arlington.

Messi enters the match as Argentina's only goalscorer this tournament, netting five goals across the opening two fixtures. His hat trick against Algeria followed by two goals versus Austria pushed him past the men's World Cup record with 18 career tournament goals. The Inter Miami star currently leads the Golden Boot race by two goals.

Scaloni insisted the bench decision has no connection to potential knockout round opponents. We aren't in a position to choose our next opponent, the coach stated. He emphasized respect for all competitors while admitting his preference would be for the World Cup to end immediately with Argentina crowned champions.

Following Saturday's encounter, Argentina travels to Miami for their round of 32 clash against the Group H runner-up. That group features Spain, Uruguay, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia, with the final standings determining their next opponent.
