Manchester United have confirmed that Manuel Ugarte has undergone successful surgery to address a knee ligament injury sustained while representing Uruguay at the FIFA World Cup. The 25-year-old midfielder was stretchered off during Uruguay's final group game against Spain and later described the setback on social media as "the most serious injury a footballer can face."

A club statement confirmed the operation was successful and that Ugarte will now begin a carefully managed rehabilitation programme under the supervision of United's medical and performance staff. The club wished him well and pledged full support throughout his recovery.

The injury has effectively ended any potential summer transfer for the 25-year-old, who had been open to offers prior to the tournament. He is now expected to miss the majority of the upcoming season.
