Manchester United's 15-year-old wonderkid, JJ Gabriel, caused a storm this week by requesting to leave the club. Gabriel is another in the long line of Premier League academy prodigies who attract massive media attention before even making their first-team debut. The 15-year-old Manchester United attacker scored 23 goals in 23 appearances in the U18 Premier League in 2025-26, despite playing well above his age group, and was also named United's Young Player of the Year. His outstanding displays have carried over to this season and, having already featured for the senior side in preseason, Gabriel marked his UEFA Youth League debut with a hat trick in United's 5-0 win over Sabah last week.

However, the talk around him suddenly moved away from the pitch last week, as sources told ESPN that Gabriel has asked to leave and requested his registration be cancelled before he becomes eligible for a scholarship contract when he turns 16 on Oct. 6. United boss Michael Carrick had been preparing to include him in the Carabao Cup squad against Brighton & Hove Albion earlier this week before the situation took a swift turn, but ESPN sources said that Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City and Chelsea are among the other top clubs interested. So what is there to know about a player who has yet to make a competitive first-team appearance, and why is he so highly rated?

Position As with most prodigious talents under the age of 16, it is easier to judge the player Gabriel is now, rather than predict where he will eventually settle at senior level. Having played slightly deeper in his earlier years, he has prospered in a more advanced role, either starting on the right wing before moving inside, or operating with liberty as a No. 10 behind a central striker. In the right system, and with appropriate structural protection around him, he could also make a difference as a false nine striker. The key is getting Gabriel into high-x G areas as frequently as possible. While he is capable of receiving the ball between the lines and pushing up the pitch via his dribbling skills, his main weapons are his excellent shooting and finishing. Therefore, a role that sees him play at the heart of an attack would bring out his most outstanding qualities.

Strengths Gabriel excels in many of the same areas that make modern elite young talents stand out. The basic technical ingredients are all there: his close control is immaculate, he is predominantly right footed but is excellent with either foot, and his sharpness in congested areas often sees him escape situations that initially look like blind alleys. He also manipulates and protects the ball superbly. Certain characteristics do distinguish him from his peers, though. The most pertinent being his exceptional balance and command of his body. Though sharp turns and directional changes are not unusual for highly talented young players, Gabriel takes the combination of technical coordination and body control to another level, which is particularly apparent in one-vs.-one situations. The way he shifts his body weight in a flash, without losing control of the ball, makes his next action very difficult to predict. At times, just a small jig from Gabriel can be enough to unbalance a defender. Rather than being a typical polished academy talent, there's something of an instinctive "street footballer" type about him.
