Gotham FC announced the mutual termination of Spanish forward Esther González’s contract, as she steps away viendo matters in Spain. The 33‑year‑old, a 2025 NWSL MVP finalist and the club’s all‑time leading scorer (30 regular‑season goals), joined the New Jersey side after winning the 2023 World Cup. She helped Gotham claim its first NWSL Championship, scoring the winning goal, and added another title the following year with 13 regular‑season goals. She also lifted the team to the inaugural Concacaf W Championship in 2025, paving the way to the 2028 FIFA Women’s Club World Cup.

Gotham president Yael Averbuch West praised González as a professional on and off the field, thanking her for “four major trophies” and her leadership over three years. The club will always support her wherever she goes.

The announcement follows a late brace from González that sparked a 3‑2 comeback win, and comes amid roster moves: forward Sam Kerr joined in July, defender Emily Sonnett is recovering from a knee injury, and coach Juan Carlos Amorós is on paternity leave. González’s decision comes after welcoming her first child in January.
