FIFA Issues 5-Match Ban to Qatar's Madibo After Koné Injury

FIFA handed Qatar player Assim Madibo a five-match ban following a tackle that broke Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné's leg. The incident happened during Canada's 6-0 victory over Qatar in Vancouver. Madibo received a straight red card in the 51st minute after tackling Koné from behind, which the disciplinary committee labeled as serious foul play.

Koné suffered a broken tibia and fibula in his left leg, requiring surgery after being carried off on a stretcher. While Koné thanked supporters for their prayers on Instagram, the injury dimmed Canada's first World Cup win. Madibo apologized to Koné in person after the match, though the Qatar national team did not comment on the ruling.

This penalty ranks among the tournament's harshest, though it remains shorter than Luis Suárez's nine-match ban in 2014. Qatar still has a chance to advance to the round of 32 as a third-place finisher. They face Bosnia-Herzegovina in their final group stage match on Wednesday without their suspended defender.

FIFA's decision remains subject to appeal by the player or the federation. This suspension removes a key player from the squad during their final push for qualification. Qatar must now find a replacement to maintain their hopes of progressing past the group stage.
