USWNT head coach Emma Hayes believes the U-20 Women's World Cup is a critical platform for player development. In an exclusive interview with ESPN, Hayes expressed concern that the United States is falling behind rival nations like Spain and England, who utilize youth international competitions to build high-level experience for their players.

Hayes noted that European players often participate in high-quality international tournaments, gaining significantly more competitive minutes over a four-year cycle than American players. She pointed to stars like Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmatí as proof of concept, noting how youth tournament exposure correlates with senior success.

Currently, NWSL rules allowing players to turn professional as teenagers create conflicts, as youth World Cups do not fall on mandatory FIFA release dates. This has caused top talents to miss crucial developmental milestones. Hayes argues that to remain successful through 2031 and beyond, the U.S. must ensure its players receive the same international exposure and tournament pressure as their global counterparts.
