Congo Ebola Forces World Camp Cancellation

The Democratic Republic of Congo has cancelled their three-day World Cup preparation camp in Kinshasa due to an Ebola outbreak in the country's east. The rare Bundibugyo strain has killed over 130 people with nearly 600 suspected cases, prompting the World Health Organization to declare it a public health emergency of international concern.

Despite the camp cancellation, Congo's warm-up matches against Denmark in Belgium on June 3 and Chile in Spain on June 9 will proceed as scheduled. All players and French coach Sébasten Desabre are based outside Congo, with most playing in France. Team staff remaining in Congo are departing immediately.

FIFA is monitoring the situation and working with health authorities across all three 2026 host countries. Congo, who qualified for their first World Cup since 1974, faces Portugal in Houston on June 17 to begin Group K play. The cancellation only affects the Kinshasa farewell ceremony, not the team's tournament participation.
