Yankuba Minteh scored the only goal as Brighton secured a 1-0 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The Seagulls claimed their first win since losing to Arsenal, moving to 40 points in the Premier League table.

Both teams created early chances in an end-to-end first half. Jack Hinshelwood forced a fine save from Melker Ellborg, while Lewis Dunk made a crucial goalline clearance from Chemsdine Talbi. Sunderland thought they'd taken the lead when Chris Rigg scored early in the second half, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Brighton broke through in the 58th minute when a quickly taken corner found Minteh, formerly of Sunderland's rivals Newcastle, who squeezed a shot from a tight angle past Ellborg. Sunderland pressed for an equalizer but couldn't find a breakthrough, with Trai Hume firing over the bar and Dennis Cirkin missing in stoppage time.
