Alonso Chooses Chelsea Over Liverpool: Timing Was Key

Xabi Alonso has said his choice to become Chelsea manager over Liverpool was simply a matter of timing. The Spaniard, who played five seasons for Liverpool between 2004 and 2009, was appointed in May and began training at Stamford Bridge last week. In a BBC Sport interview, Alonso explained that timing was the decisive factor: “It is about timings. I am here today on my first day at Stamford Bridge, talking to you.” He expressed excitement about the challenge and the club’s stature, noting he looks forward to achieving success.

Alonso was linked with the Liverpool role in 2024 when Jürgen Klopp was set to leave, and again this year as discussions about Arne Slot’s departure intensified. Many highlighted his successes with Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong at Bayer Leverkusen, but he chose Chelsea, receiving the title of manager rather than head coach.

He said the title gives shared responsibility: “We all feel responsible for that.” Alonso emphasized alignment with sporting directors and building the right squad, noting the team already has a strong base and good squad, and that the focus is on reinforcing it wisely.

He also mentioned wanting Enzo Fernández to stay amid uncertainty. The Premier League 2026 summer transfer window and preseason fixtures are still unfolding, but Chelsea’s new manager’s priority is clear: to make sound decisions and maintain the club’s competitive edge.
