Shesterkin Markstrom Rare Goalie Brawl

Igor Shesterkin engaged in a rare goalie fight with Jacob Markstrom midway through the third period during the Rangers' 4-1 victory over the Devils on Tuesday. The netmeters removed their helmets and exchanged punches after Shesterkin was involved in a scrum, with the Rangers' goaltender landing more blows before wrestling Markstrom to the ice.

The brawl brought some of the loudest cheers of the season for the Rangers, who have struggled at Madison Square Garden with just 12 wins in 37 games. "We needed that," said Rangers captain J.T. Miller, acknowledging the boost the fight provided during what has been a mostly dismal home season that has frustrated the fanbase.

Both Shesterkin and Markstrom received five minutes for fighting and two minutes for leaving their creases. The Rangers went on to win their third straight home game, with Shesterkin joking afterward, "I'd like to thank my boxing coach." Markstrom explained his decision to skate the length of the ice: "I felt like I needed to do something."
