The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed former Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle to a two-year, $12.25 million contract, NFL Network reported. Dowdle, who rushed for 1,076 yards in 2025, brings consecutive 1,000-yard seasons to Pittsburgh after splitting time between Carolina and Dallas. The deal comes as the Steelers rebuild their backfield following Kenneth Gainwell's departure to Tampa Bay.

Dowdle emerged as Carolina's featured back when starter Chuba Hubbard suffered a calf injury. He shattered franchise records with 473 scrimmage yards over a two-game stretch, surpassing Christian McCaffrey's mark. Coach Dave Canales praised Dowdle's "violent" running style, elevating him to the starting role after a brief rotation attempt. His standout performance included 130 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a midseason win at Green Bay.

Despite his early-season success, Dowdle's production declined sharply in the final three games, with only 28 carries for 88 yards. He expressed frustration with his diminished role and planned to test free agency. The South Carolina product went undrafted in 2020 but eventually became Dallas' starter in 2024 before joining Carolina. Pittsburgh's backfield now features Dowdle alongside bruising runner Jaylen Warren and 2025 third-round pick Kaleb Johnson.
