Miami defensive end and 2026 NFL draft prospect Rueben Bain Jr. was involved in a car accident in March 2024 that resulted in a passenger's death, according to a report published Sunday. The crash occurred around 4 a.m. on March 17 on Interstate 95 northbound in Miami. Bain was cited for careless driving at the scene, though charges were dropped before the passenger died from her injuries.

The passenger, 22-year-old Georgia woman Destiny Betts, was taken to Ryder Trauma Center and remained in a coma for nearly three months before dying from her injuries on June 13, 2024. Two other passengers in Bain's 2021 Land Rover were Miami football players Wesley Bissainthe and Nyjalik Kelly. The crash report alleges Bain's vehicle rear-ended another car, veered into a concrete barrier, then ricocheted into another barrier before stopping on the highway shoulder.

Bain's family received a statement from Betts' family calling the crash a "tragic accident" and wishing Bain well as he continues his life and career. Despite the incident, Bain's football stock has risen dramatically. He is ranked No. 15 on Mel Kiper Jr.'s latest Big Board for the upcoming NFL draft after recording 9.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss as a junior, helping lead Miami to the College Football Playoff championship game.
