Free agent safety Kevin Byard III has agreed to a one-year, $9 million deal with the New England Patriots, according to NFL Network. The move reunites Byard with Patriots coach Mike Vrabel, who previously coached him with the Tennessee Titans from 2018-23. The 32-year-old safety led the NFL with seven interceptions in 2025, marking his second career league-lead in that category.

Byard's impact was substantial during his two seasons with the Chicago Bears, where he started 34 games after signing a two-year, $15 million contract in 2024. Last season, he recorded 93 tackles, eight passes defended, and four tackles for loss while playing nearly every defensive snap. His consistency is remarkable - Byard has never missed a game since entering the NFL as a third-round pick in 2016, logging 164 consecutive regular season appearances with 155 starts.

Throughout his 10-year career, Byard has posted at least four interceptions in six seasons and earned first-team All-Pro honors three times. His 36 career interceptions rank second among active players. After spending his first eight seasons with the Titans before a midseason trade to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023, Byard brings veteran leadership and proven playmaking ability to New England's secondary.
