Executive vice president Brandt Tilis stated that Young "ascended" last season, reaching a new level, though his ultimate potential remains "unknown." After being benched early in his second year, the 2023 No. 1 overall pick threw for 3,011 yards with 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, leading the Panthers to an 8-8 record and an NFC South championship.

Young is currently under contract for just over $12 million this season, with the team holding the option to extend his deal for a projected $25.9 million in 2027. Tilis compared the situation to the Chiefs' approach with Patrick Mahomes, emphasizing that Young's development is tied to the team's growth. "His ceiling is currently unknown, and I think that is exciting for us," Tilis remarked.

The decision on Young's contract is described as "collaborative," involving Tilis, general manager Dan Morgan, head coach Dave Canales, and owner David Tepper.
