Former New York Jets first-round draft pick Darron Lee remains jailed without bond after a judge ruled Wednesday he will face first-degree murder charges in the death of his girlfriend in Tennessee. The 31-year-old linebacker, who played 58 NFL games with the Jets, Kansas City Chiefs, and Buffalo Bills from 2016-2020, was arrested last week following the discovery of 32-year-old Gabriella Perpétuo's body at their rented home in Ooltewah.

Authorities found extensive evidence contradicting Lee's claim that Perpétuo fell in the shower, including multiple stab wounds, a bite mark, severe head trauma, and a broken neck. An arrest affidavit detailed blood throughout the residence, cleaning supplies near bloodstains, and injuries on Lee's body including lacerations on his hands and chest. Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp argued Lee's explanation "doesn't make any sense whatsoever" and noted the case is eligible for capital punishment, though prosecutors haven't decided on seeking the death penalty.

Lee was already on probation in Florida and Ohio for previous offenses when arrested. His attorney, deputy public defender Mike Little, argued that bond is often set for homicide defendants with prior felonies. The case has shocked the NFL community, as Lee was the 20th overall pick in the 2016 draft and defensive MVP of the 2015 Sugar Bowl during his standout college career at Ohio State.
