The Cincinnati Bengals are searching for their explosive play identity that powered their 2021 Super Bowl run. Since that magical season, Cincinnati has fallen from sixth in the NFL in big plays to the bottom third of the league, even with quarterback Joe Burrow healthy and star receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins on the field.

In 2021, Chase recorded eight touchdowns on receptions of 25-plus yards as a rookie, but defenses have since adjusted by double-teaming him and limiting downfield opportunities. The Bengals' offensive explosiveness has dropped from sixth to as low as 27th in subsequent seasons. Despite this, both Chase and Higgins had productive years following massive contract extensions worth a combined $551 million in total value and $250 million guaranteed.

Teams that generate six or more explosive plays win 63% of games, highlighting their importance. The Bengals still found ways to score, but the deeper numbers show big plays haven't materialized like in previous years. This year's playoffs demonstrated that teams stretching the field have the best shot at winning big. Finding ways to manufacture those explosive plays again could be the key to returning Cincinnati to championship contention.
