The San Francisco 49ers agreed to a one-year deal with free agent cornerback Jack Jones, adding depth to their defensive backfield. Agent Drew Rosenhaus confirmed the parties reached agreement Friday after Jones visited the team's facility. The 28-year-old brings four seasons of NFL experience after being originally drafted by New England in the fourth round in 2022.

Jones spent last season with Miami, starting all 17 games and recording one interception, two forced fumbles, and six passes defensed. His specialty is press man coverage, which should translate well to new coordinator Raheem Morris' defensive scheme. He slots in behind starters Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green at outside cornerback, providing valuable depth for San Francisco.

Jones showed promise as a rookie with the Patriots but was cut midway through his second season. He then signed with Las Vegas and made an immediate impact, returning two interceptions for touchdowns in back-to-back wins over the Chargers and Chiefs. However, his aggressive style backfired the following year when he allowed 10 touchdowns in coverage, per Pro Football Focus. The Raiders released him last April before he landed in Miami.

Across his career, Jones has eight interceptions and 33 passes defensed. His four career pick-sixes rank second in the NFL since he entered the league in 2022. The signing gives the 49ers a veteran option with playmaking ability who can compete for significant playing time if called upon.
